What To Look For In Freezers
The usual freezer we have in home is a silent worker. It operates year in and year out, requiring nothing other than a constant supply of electricity. In time it will need its replacement.
Now we will talk about some things that you are better informed of, so you can make the best decision.
We will talk about the freezer size first. And it of course depends on what you need. Generally though, most people buy a freezer that is too large. They base their judgment upon perceived usages rather than real usage. The reasons for that are usually hidden in thoughts that it will be a grand sale at the store and it will be possible that bigger freezer will be needed. The reality though is that most freezers end up being operated only half full.
Also, remember that all frozen foods should be consumed within six weeks. You food is bound to be dehydrated if you store it longer that that, and no wrapping will help it. As the moisture leaves the food both taste and nutritional value will be lowered. So anything stored longer than six weeks will probably end up being thrown out .
For example, try to remember how many food or ice cream you wasted because crystals appeared. That ice forming inside the package is a sign of dehydration.
Freezers are efficient when it comes to energy consumption, but they will still increase your power bills.
An upright freezer consumes more electricity. This happend when doors get opened and all the cold air spills outside. With time, it will stay on more often. Since the upright freezers are frost free, and most of them are, they consume more power then the older models. Because we don’t have to defrost it, we have to pay for that advantage.
Since the cold air is heavier, it will remain inside the freezer if the doors are opened from above, and this is why small chest freezers are great energy savers. But, chest types are manual and they need to defrosted at least once per year.
Most freezers are not somewhere where they can be seen so they do not have to look attractive. Most of us do not think that freezers should have some additional features and options.
We usually see them as some large boxes where we store our food so we can use it later.
But there are more brands that offer a lot of options when it comes to chest freezers. Things such as frost free, built in alarms, digital temperature displays, push button controls, and quick freeze are now on the market.
